Can anyone help me with this ?

I want to change the oil in the auto box on my 1997 Sharan (sorry about the VW bit but I assume the Ford is the same ?)

I can't find any reference to even checking the oil level in the owners handbook !

I want to know how to check the level how to drain how to refil and what oil to use.

Any help guidance and advice very welcome.

Thanks

Why do you want to change the autobox oil?

You shouldn't ever need to do this. You should also only need to top up if you have had a leak or other misfortune - perhaps that's why it is not mentioned in the manual.

This was confirmed to me by VW today when I asked for a change for my VR6 Auto.

On older boxes, heat sometimes makes the O-Ring brittle that seals the plasic fill spout to the gearbox casing and some seepage occurs there. If this is the case and the levels need checking/topping up ( at the corrrect temperature), be careful when removing the anti-tamper cap seal and fill spout plug. While trying to remove plug it's very easy to pull the whole fill spout from the transmission casing! If it happens, all the accumulated road grime , grit and foreign bodies promptly drop into the your lovely clean remaining ATF. If this happens don't start the engine, but drain down and clean out the sump pan and re-fill with new ATF. I wouldn't trust the strainer to keep fine particulates out of the hydraulic systems if they do get in by accident.

Hope this helps.
